On April 16 we crowned our 4th Ms. Alvin Senior! Five ladies competed for the title but only one can be Ms Alvin Senior 2010. Ms. Ray Owens was the crown winner this year and has already started her reign in Alvin. Ray looked fabulous at the Frontier Day Parade today. Congratulations Ray!

The health benefits of swimming and water exercise are endless. The low-impact nature of swimming and water walking makes it an exercise for people of all ages. Alvin Parks and Recreation Department has two year-round aquatic programs to help Alvin citizen’s stay healthy even when the temperature drops. Senior Morning Swim is open Monday – Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and Evening Lap Swim is open to all ages Monday – Thursday 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Both aquatic programs meet at Harby Junior High’s heated indoor swimming pool. Cost for Senior Morning Swim is $15 per month and Evening Lap Swim is $20 per month. Family passes are available for Evening Lap swim at a cost of $40 per month. Ready to jump in? Whereas, November 15 has been designated as Texas Recycles Day and the 2009 theme is “It All Comes Back to You”; and

WHEREAS, Recycling will significantly decrease the amount Texans spend annually to dispose of their trash; and

WHEREAS, Using recycled materials for the manufacturing of new products requires less energy than extracting and refining virgin materials, thereby reducing the combustion of fossil fuels for energy and the resulting air emissions and conserving our natural resources; and

WHEREAS, Alvin Recycles encourages community leaders to spread the word about programs that involve citizens in environmentally-conscious behaviors.

WHEREAS, Alvin Recycles, the Friends of Alvin Parks Foundation and Alvin Rotary Foundation have collaborated to organize November EcoFest on November 14 to promote recycling opportunities for Alvin citizens.

Now Therefore, I, Gary Appelt, Mayor of the City of Alvin, Texas and on behalf of the City Council do hereby proclaim the date of November 15, 2009 as Texas Recycles Day. Don't miss the Alvin Volunteer Fire Department Annual Fire Prevention Open House, this Saturday from 9 AM - 1 PM. The event will take place at Fire Station 1 at 302 West House Street.

There will be a House Fire Simulator, Moonwalks, Sparky, refreshments and fun games. The Police Department will be on hand to provide fingerprinting for children of all ages.

The Fish are back!! Bob S. Owen Aquatic Center, 919 Bayou Dr., has been transformed into a fisherman’s paradise. Come see how many fish you can catch. Fishing starts on October 3rd from 9 am to 1 pm for ages 12 & under and 1 pm to 9 pm for all ages. First 300 kids will receive a free t-shirt. Make Plans Now for “National Night Out 2009!”

On Tuesday, October 6th, 2009, neighborhoods throughout the city of Alvin are invited to join forces with communities statewide for the 26th Annual “National Night Out.” National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and, for the 18th consecutive year, is being co-sponsored by the Alvin Police Department. Millions of people have already participated in “America’s Night Out Against Crime,” in August, and for the second year in row Alvin, Texas, along with many other Texas communities, is pleased to participate in October.

National Night Out 2009 is designed to: (1) heighten crime prevention awareness; (2) generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts; (3) strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

From 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6th, 2009, residents in neighborhoods throughout the city of Alvin are being asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights, and spend the evening outside with neighbors. Many neighborhoods will be hosting block parties, barbecues, covered-dish dinners, and enjoying visits from members of the Alvin Police Department, the Alvin Volunteer Fire Department, the Alvin EMS, and other community leaders.

Last year there were twenty-five separate National Night Out parties within the city of Alvin, involving hundreds of people. Considering the then recent devastation and aftermath of hurricane Ike, we were proud of the effort and believe the unity shared that one evening has benefited our community throughout the last year. In 2007 there were thirty-two neighborhood parties. The continued safety of our community depends upon neighbors watching out for each other. “National Night Out 2009” is the perfect opportunity for meeting with your neighbors and getting to know them better. Chief of police, Mike Merkel said, “The National Night Out program is an excellent way to discuss issues that affect the neighborhood to the police department when they visit you, and the concept of networking with your neighbors strengthens the security of your neighborhood.”

If you and your neighbors would like to participate in “National Night Out 2009,” please register by calling Alvin Police Crime Prevention Officer Ruben Solano at (281) 585-7124. Registration is free and places your neighborhood on a roster of participants. This roster informs the police officers and other public servants of the many participating neighborhoods and helps them visit as many events as time permits. CPO Solano encourages all neighborhoods to participate and says, “National Night Out is a great time for everyone, we’re hoping for record participation this year.”

This weekend is Alvin's Third Annual All American Festival. Festivities start Saturday morning at the Alvin High School with the Beneezy Purple Monkey Fun Run at 7:30 a.m. After the fun run a beautiful parade will begin downtown at 10 a.m. immediately following the parade at National Oak Park the fun will continue at the Park with a carnival, Depot Days, Car & Tractor Show, BBQ Cook-off and entertainment. Stop back by on Sunday for more fun and to see who will be named BBQ Cook-off Master of Alvin! After two days of fun in the park we are sure that everyone will be ready for a refreshing day at the pool. Splashmania will begin at the Bob S. Owen Aquatic Center from 12:30 - 6 p.m. Admission will be free all day along with a professional DJ for your enjoyment and CiCi's Pizza! This is sure to be a weekend worth staying in town for!

First Alvin Senior Center Healthlete

Grace Collins is the first Alvin Senior Center’s Healthlete. Mrs. Collins who is 80 and a half years young, earned 10,000 points by attending 3 cardio classes a week and completing Active Living Everyday”s 5 month course. In addition Mrs. Collins attended monthly Learning Lunches, participated in Wii tournaments and other special activities to earn the title Healthlete.

Mrs. Collins began the exercise classes with some trepidation due to hip pain, but within a month or two, the pain had subsided. It didn’t take Grace very long to become the “walking” champion by walking over 15,000 steps a day. Because of her commitment and preserverence, Grace Collins became an inspiration for all of the seniors. She has earned the titile Healthlete and our congratulations.

The Women's Center Seventh Annual Benefit will be held August 14-16 at Stubbies on CR 99. The event includes a pool and dart tournament, barbecue cook off, live auction, raffles and live music. Barbecue plates will be available for $7 each and a 2009 Harley Street Bob, valued at $18,000 will be raffled off to raise funds to support the operation of the Northern Brazoria County Shelter. Bob S. Owen Aquatic Center:
There are only a few more weeks of summer and the Bob S. Owen Aquatic Center, 919 Bayou Dr., is open! For your enjoyment the pool features a mushroom fountain, outdoor showers, pavilions, picnic tables, shade area, three tube slide and a zero depth splash area. Open swim seven days a week from 12:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Admission is $2 per person at the gate. Summer passes can be purchased for $50 per person or $90 per family (2-5 family members) from either the Parks Office, 800 Dyche Ln., or at the pool. The Bob S. Hot summer temperatures bring high energy bills. It is a struggle to keep cool and comfortable, while watching the electric meter constantly spin. Raising the thermostat to 77 degrees or more does little to offset the 100+ degrees outside!
There are more energy efficient products on the market to help with the high cost of energy. Attic insulation, new roofing tiles, sun-radiant paints and solar attic vents. All of course cost the homeowner money. Investing in new technology to reduce those monthly bills will save energy and in time give a return on the investment.

A couple in China designed their home for energy efficiency from top to bottom. The most interesting idea is the garden on the top of the home. It not only provides them with fresh produce, but the layer of soil insulates the home and cuts energy use. A great idea, but not feasible for Texas roof tops.
“Green Roofs for Healthy Cities” is an organization working to create design standards for using products such a vegetative roofing systems. Firestone also has its own Web site at www.firestonegreen.com which lists more environmentally friendly products.

Reducing the amount of energy needed for homes and businesses is part of preserving the environment for tomorrow. Change is difficult, but the solution to our high energy use and harm to the environment, demands change. It comes down to the reality; fossil fuels will be gone one day.
Using renewable energy is one change on the horizon. Microalgae-tiny, single-celled aquatic organisms seem to be the newest star in developing renewable energy. The tiny organisms provide oil that can be turned into liquid fuels such as biodiesel and jet fuel.

The plants speedy grow rate and efficient photosynthesis add to its potential. Also, many strains can grow in saltwater, water from treatment plants, or open ponds. That means the microorganisms can potentially make more than 50 times as much oil as land plants on the same area.

Making bio-fuels from algae is already happening. Algenol Biofuels, an algae-to-ethanol company announced in June plans for a pilot plant with Dow Chemical Co. in Freeport. And in January, Continental Airlines conducted a 90-minute test flight with a fuel blend derived from algae and Jatropha plants.
Homeowners can find easier ways to reduce the use of energy. Simple ideas such as turning off every light when not in use, unplugging electronics, chargers, turning off the television, using the CFL light bulbs, and raising the thermostat a few degrees will cut kilowatts.

Conserving natural resources should be an everyday habit. Reducing, reusing, and recycling are simple ways citizens can make a difference for the environment. It is basic conservation to save the household metals, plastics 1 & 2, newspaper, and paper for the recycling bin.

The Alvin Aquatic Club Gators’ Swim Team competed in the annual Summer Games of Texas state competition in San Antonio , Texas on the weekend of July 24-26. Alvin placed 17th in overall points out of 72 participating teams. The Gators picked up a total of 11 medals.

“Proud doesn’t even begin to describe how I feel about all of our kids that swam this season,” Coach Natalie Melenric said. “Advancing 30 kids to the state meet went way beyond my expectations for this summer. It makes a coach’s job that much more fulfilling when you have a group of great kids to work with and watch succeed.”

The Alvin Aquatic Club hopes to pick back up with a fall swim program in the September time frame.

Waterpolo- Head Coach John Yokum, along with assistant Thomas Mead, led the Alvin Aquatic Club waterpolo teams to stunning finishes in the Jalapeno League Championship tournament (July 13-16).

The 14-and-under team took first place overall in their age group. Several Gators made the All-Tournament Team, which is chosen by other coaches in the league. All tournament picks included: Taylor Porter (12 and under co-ed), Justin Easley, Tim O’Sullivan, Logan Webb (14 and under boys), Dillon Mead, Hunter Brown (16 and under boys), Andrew Price (18 and under boys), Holly Gray, and Emily Roosevelt (18 and under girls).

Diving- The Alvin Aquatic Club diving team participated in two invitationals this summer. On June 26, Alvin faced

Richmond Rosenberg at the LCISD natatorium and they also competed on July 2 at Alvin High School.

Youngster remembers water safety rules

Four-year-old Yasmin Barrios is a quick learner. Thanks to skills she learned while taking swimming lessons taught by the Alvin Parks and Recreation Department last summer, Yasmin was able to swim to safety after accidentally falling into the family’s above-the-ground pool at her home.

The Barrios family really believes in teaching their children to swim. Yasmin’s older sister took lessons last summer and again this year, and she recently completed her second year of lessons in the Watertots Program, which is designed for three to four-year-old children.

“We decided for her to take the class a second year so that she would not forget the skills she learned last year.

“We were told that she was too small for the Level I lessons, but hope to get her enrolled in that program next summer after she has grown some,” her mother Magdelina Barrios said.

The Watertots Program is advertised as, “a class for first time swimmers and the class focuses on the orientation of participants to the aquatic environment. Watertots teaches elementary aquatic locomotive skills.”

The Barrios family decided the girls needed to be enrolled in the swimming classes because the family has a four-foot above-the-ground pool in their back yard. The older sister, who is almost eight, took Level I classes last summer and again this year.

Her younger sister is still too young for lessons, but the family plans to enroll her when she is a little older.

Their parents made the decision to enroll the girls in swimming lessons after they saw the lessons advertised in the newspaper.

Yasmin’s class was split into two sections with two teachers working with four students each. “I liked the class and was not afraid. I was excited to be going again this year. It is a lot of fun to be splashing around and getting all wet,” she admitted.

Yasmin first began taking swimming lessons last summer when she was only three-years-old. “Last winter, my husband, Yasmin and I were together in our back yard.

As a joke, my husband reached down into our pool and splashed water into Yasmin’s face. In turn, she decided to get even by wetting her dad’s face. When she reached down into the four-foot deep water, she lost her balance and fell into the pool. Because she had taken swimming lessons, she knew what to do.

She did not panic but simply swam across the pool to where we were and we were then able to pull her to safety,” her mother Magdalena reported.

“I am sure that without the lessons, she would have panicked or would have taken in a mouthful of water and sank to the bottom of the pool. It could have been a frightening experience for her and something that resulted in her having a fear of the water,” Magdalena said.

Yasmin has recently completed a second year of swimming lessons. “We would like to encourage all parents to enroll their children in swimming lessons. Make sure they have the basic swimming skills they need because you never know when these skills may just help to save their lives,” her mom added.

Following her swimming lessons, Yasmin is quite comfortable when near the pool in her back yard. She has a healthy respect for the water but also understands that she has the necessary skills and is quite capable of navigating through the water.

JR Albert Charitable Foundation Presents Check to The Friends of Alvin Parks Foundation

This past Thursday, June 4, during the City Council meeting, the JR Albert Charitable Foundation presented a check to the Friends of Alvin Parks Foundation in the amount of $6,000 for a security system to be installed at the Alvin Senior Center.

JR Albert was a frequent participant at our senior center prior to his passing. The Senior Citizens Advisory Board has pushed for the last few years a security system, however the City budget has not been able to accommodate this request. Now, with this grant we will be able to make it happen. A special thanks to the JR Albert Charitable Foundation for their generous contribution.

Teen Police Academy Program Being Offered

The Alvin Police Department is now accepting applications for the third session of the Teen Police Academy Program. The Program will start this summer and is intended for high school students who have completed either of grades 9 through 12.

The Teen Police Academy is a community relations program designed to promote positive interaction between the Alvin Police Department and the youth of our community. This two week course is scheduled to start July 14th, 2009 and continue until July 23rd, 2009. Classes will meet Tuesday through Thursday mornings, with one class on Saturday, July 18th, 2009. The Classes will be held in the Emergency Operations Center of the Alvin Police Department. The curriculum includes such things as: Traffic Law, Crime Scene Investigations, Police Dispatching, and much more. The topics covered will present the student with practical knowledge and in some cases actual hands on application.

This is truly an eye-opening opportunity for our area youth. Their participation in this Program enables them to learn more about our community and gives them the opportunity to become more involved. The Teen Police Academy Program is not designed to recruit teens for future police work, but rather it is intended to give them a view into police work and the law enforcement community that may otherwise be unavailable to them.

AARP DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM BEING OFFERED

The Alvin Police Department is proud to co-sponsor the AARP Driver Safety Program with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). The AARP Driver Safety Program was developed by the AARP in 1979. This program is a driver refresher course especially designed to meet the needs of older drivers. It covers such issues as: age-related physical changes, declining perceptual skills, local driving problems, license renewal requirements, and much more.

Ken Moore, an AARP instructor, will be teaching the course at the Alvin Police Department. He looks forward to “reminding seniors of the skills and techniques that they may have once learned,” and to “give them an update on the rules of the road.” Class size is limited to the first 18 seniors (age 50 and above) who register. AARP charges $14.00 for the program; however, AARP members who bring their AARP cards will be charged $12.00 per person. You need not be an AARP member to take the course. All participants who successfully complete the course are eligible for a 10% reduction in automobile insurance premiums.

The upcoming session of the AARP Driver Safety Program is scheduled for Wednesday, June 10th, 2009 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the Alvin Police Department, 1500 S. Gordon Street. Chief of Police Mike Merkel states, “The opportunity to provide educational assistance to senior citizens will enhance their driving skills and knowledge which will promote safe driving habits, prevent traffic accidents, and help to avoid traffic violations. The purpose of the program is to support mature drivers with continued mobility and independence.” Crime Prevention Officer Ruben Solano states, “This course benefits everyone, not just the participating senior. We began sponsoring this program in 1999. This will be our thirty-third class and we’re proud to be part of this valuable community service.”

New parks foundation to provide support

The Alvin Parks and Recreation Department received a major supporter with the recent formation of the Friends of Alvin Parks Foundation.

The Foundation received official word from the Internal Revenue Service in February that its application for a 501 C-3, tax exempt status was approved.

“Obtaining the 501 C-3 nonprofit status is a major factor in the success of the Foundation,” according to Foundation president, Jeff Minkoff.

“This will allow the Foundation to seek and receive grants from other foundations to benefit the parks and recreation department which otherwise the City could not pursue. Many private foundations are not allowed to donate to governmental agencies, but can donate to other private foundations, which, in turn, can make a grant to the City. Additionally, citizens who make donations to the Foundation can deduct their donation from their taxes,” Minkoff added.

Park Board Chairman Dwight Rhodes, who is a member of the Foundation, praised Ed Hersch, Parks and Recreation director, and his staff for their diligent efforts in establishing the Foundation.

“Establishing a foundation is not an easy task, and, while it took them a few years to make into reality, the benefits for the Alvin Parks and Recreation Department will be endless,” said Rhodes.

“With limited funding from the City’s general fund every year, the Foundation opens the doors to a significantly larger number of to help finance enhancements or capital projects for the parks and recreation system,” Rhodes stated.

"The Foundation will not seek funds for maintenance and general operational costs,” according to Ed Hersch. “We on the staff are very excited about the opportunity to work with the Foundation for outside funds which will help to enhance leisure opportunities for our citizens,” he said. Hersch will serve as an ex-officio member of the Foundation Board.

The Foundation by-laws state the current Park Board chair is automatically a member of the Foundation Board and the director is an ex-officio member. This way, there is a direct link for communication of needs between the Foundation and the Department.

The Foundation received its first major donation recently, a $3,000 grant from the Tour de Braz Bike Club.

These funds will be used to construct a bridge connecting the walking trail at Alvin Community College to Bob Briscoe Park. Also in the works is a grant for the Alvin Senior Center and enhancements to National Oak Park, according to Hersch.

At the annual Alvin All American Festival, which is held over Labor Day weekend, the Foundation hosts a barbecue cook-off and auction.

The proceeds from the cook-off and brisket auction help the Foundation with operational expenses.

“The support provided by local attorney Brian Kennemer, with the organization documents and guidance from Charles Stagg, CPA with the application for the IRS nonprofit status was fantastic!

“We could not have accomplished these two major criteria for the Foundation without their help,” Minkoff said. “We are looking at possible dates to have a formal reception for the community to meet the Foundation Board and become nonvoting members of the Friends of Alvin Parks Foundation. This will be a great opportunity for community involvement,” Minkoff added.

In addition to Minkoff and Rhodes, the other Foundation Board members include Bobbie Briscoe-Moore, Lexie Hall, Doyle Swindell and Jody Schibi.

Mother Daughter Sleep Over

Saturday was the First Annual Mother Daughter Sleepover. Everyone had a blast; there was fun,food, and more fun. You can request for an application that there information can be given for the interviewing and then they will select the chores that can be successful completed to assist the needy. Now they don’t replace big roofs or big jobs… Sorry, but there are lots of little things that it is so impossible to get done on their own without the help of others. Judy Zavalla Crowned Ms. Alvin Senior 2009!

Saturday, April 25th the City of Alvin Senior Center crowned Judy Zavalla Ms. Alvin Senior 2009! She was crowned Saturday evening by Cathy Hollis, Ms Alvin Senior 2008 and current Ms. Texas Senior. First Runner Up was Beverly Kimbrough, Second Runner Up was Charlotte Jordon and the Third Runner Up was Patty Donnerberg. Judy will go on to represent Alvin in the Ms. Texas Senior Pageant scheduled to be held August 15, 2009 in Dallas, TX. All of the amazing and talented contestants competed in four categories, evening gown, talent, philosophy of life, and interviews with the judges, for the chance to be crowned Ms. Alvin Senior. Father Son Campout Tickets Now on Sale

Turn off the TV and pull out your tent. What better way to spend some quality time together than a camping trip! Join the Alvin Parks and Recreation Department on Saturday, June 13th and Sunday, June 14th for the Second Annual Father Son Campout, an event that encourages the bond between fathers and their sons. National Oak Park, 118 S. Magnolia, will be transformed into a campground for one action packed evening. Check in starts at 3 p.m. and fun games and activities begin at 4 pm on June 13th. Tickets are $15 each and must be purchased in advance from the Alvin Senior Center, 309 W. Sealy. Purchase your tickets today! Our Summer Registration will be held this Saturday, April 18th from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Alvin Senior Center, 309 West Sealy. This will be your first opportunity to reserve the pool for summer pool parties and register your children for summer activities including swim lessons.

After April 18th you can register at the Parks and Recreation Office, 800 Dyche Lane, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday - Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Fridays. If you have any questions please call 281-388-4299.

Salute to First Responders: Saturday, March 28th the Blue Knights of Texas VI of Brazoria County will hold a free event at MSR Race Track, S. CR 48 at Hwy 288 in Angleton, to Salute First Responders. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the community is invited to meet personnel from several local fire departments, EMS and law enforcement agencies including The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. In addition to live demonstrations the event will also include children games, face painting, moon walks and vendors. Daddy Daughter Dance 2009

Our 4th Annual Daddy Daughter Dance was held on February 6th, 7th and 13th from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at the Alvin Senior Center, 309 W. Sealy. Almost 300 Fathers and Daughters 12 and under enjoyed a delicious dinner and danced the night away to music spun by a professional DJ. Another fabulous time was had by all and we can't wait until next year!

Temporary Changes to the Senior Morning Swim Program

As many of you may know the Senior Morning Swim Program has been on hiatus for the past week. Starting today we are going to combine the Senior Morning Swim Program with our Evening Lap Swim Program. The evening swim program meets from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday thru Thursday at the Harby Jr. High's indoor pool. As new lifeguards get hired the senior program will return to its normal schedule of 7:30 - 9:30 a.m. at Harby Jr. High. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and we sincerely appreciate everyone being so patient as we work to get additional lifeguards. January 10th was a very rewarding day. Alvin’s third E-waste Recycling E –waste event was very successful. Citizens recycled enough computers, monitors, fax machines, printers, televisions and VCR's to fill 5 box trucks. Thanks to everyone for their hard work and participation in the city’s efforts to preserve our environment for tomorrow and improve the quality of life here in Alvin.

Santa set up some very special mailboxes around town so that everyone in Alvin could get their letter directly to the big man himself! When I talked to him yesterday he was having so much fun reading everyone's letters that he wanted to share a few of them with us. He will send us one new letter a day until Christmas Eve so be sure to check back everyday. He also wanted me to let everyone know how much him and his reindeer love coming to Alvin every Christmas Eve, the families here put out some of the best treats! Merry Christmas.
